Commentary on the Logic, Chapter 4

What have we achieved?

We have developed the three basic categories for describing objects:

Category Question Character Example
Quality What is it? Determinacy = Being Water ≠ Ice
Quantity How much? Determinacy ≠ Being 5 liters or 6 — both water
Measure When does it tip? Quality + Quantity 100°C: Water -> Steam

Four criteria for assessing texts can be derived from the logic of being itself: (1) Transition: Does what follows arise from what came before? (2) Determinacy: Are concepts concrete or empty? (3) Limit: Are the limits of one’s own position recognized? (4) Measure: Is the ratio of abstraction to concretion right? Applying these criteria to this very commentary shows: all four are satisfied, but never perfectly — the logic of being makes its own finitude transparent.

Strengths of the logic of being: (1) Systematic integration — it connects qualitative and quantitative aspects instead of treating them as separate worlds. (2) Capacity for development — it integrates objections instead of fending them off; the system grows through its critics. (3) Reflexivity — self-application leads to deepening, not to contradiction. (4) Practical relevance — it makes explicit the implicit structures of our everyday thinking.

Five Open Problems (Scholarly Honesty)

(1) The application problem: How exactly do categories correspond to empirical phenomena? (2) Suspicion of cultural relativism: Is the logic Eurocentric? Partly yes (culturally situated), partly no (a presuppositionless beginning). Its claim to universality has to prove itself across cultures. (3) Completeness: This is a thesis, not a proof. (4) The transition problem: Necessity here is dialectical (evident in the carrying-out), not apodictic (provable). Alternative transitions (community, difference, network) come systematically later. (5) Practicability: A middle position — an orienting heuristic, rich enough for concrete guidance, but not an algorithm one could apply mechanically.

The Practical Relevance of the Logic of Being

For science: The nodal line explains why “linear models” fail at phase transitions — the climate system, financial markets, social tipping points. Measure teaches us: quantitative accumulation eventually becomes qualitatively relevant. Anyone who just collects data without asking about qualitative thresholds understands nothing.

For personal life: Finitude is not a tragedy but the condition of determinacy. Limits are constitutive, not deficient. True infinity shows: freedom does not lie in fleeing into the limitless, but in “being-with-oneself in the other.”

For society: The distinction between spurious and true infinity is a diagnostic tool for political systems — endless growth compulsion (n+1) as spurious infinity, developed in [[kapitalismus-einfuehrung]] (optional); the circular economy as an attempt at true infinity, worked out in [[rueckkehr-1]] (optional).

The Transition to the Logic of Essence

The logic of being is the first “crisis” of logic: being fails on account of its own immediacy — every category posited as self-standing (determinate being, quantum, measure) turns out to be referred to something else. The measureless is the point where this crisis becomes explicit: the old measure collapses, but no new one is yet established. Immediacy has proven itself to be mediated.

The new question is: What are the structures of mediation? How do they work? Being becomes the “show of essence” — not unimportant, but a mode of appearance of deeper structures. From the surface of phenomena into the space of reasons. From “What is there?” to “What underlies it?”

Demystified: When Hegel says “being passes over into essence,” he doesn’t mean that some ontological transformation takes place somewhere out there. What is meant is: we, having thought this through, notice that description alone (this is so, this is so much, this has this measure) is not enough. We inevitably ask for reasons, for the why. This transition is not a leap but a discovery that we carry out in the very act of thinking.

The leap in quality: In the logic of being we proceeded intuitively — we examined immediate determinations, experimented, trusted evidence (“try to think…”). In the logic of essence we become methodical: we analyze, structure, ask for grounds. This means: we turn from spontaneous into systematic thinkers. And: the logic of being is not replaced but grasped as a moment within a more comprehensive structure. Being becomes the “show of essence” (§112) — not unimportant or false, but a surface that points toward depth.

Part II: The Doctrine of Essence

Why do I need this? Everyone knows the experience: Something appears to be so — but when you look more closely, something else lies behind it. Whoever sees only the surface is constantly deceived. The doctrine of essence provides tools for systematically advancing from appearance to ground — not as conspiracy theory, but as clean thinking.

Organizing Principle

The doctrine of essence makes the mediation structures themselves the theme — those structures that were tacitly at work in the doctrine of being, as all immediate determinations proved to be mediated. The new form of movement is no longer transition (A disappears, becomes B), but shining into one another — reciprocal constitution, in which both sides are preserved and mutually determine each other. A mirror instead of a line.

The guiding thread remains the question of truth, but on a new level: No longer “What is true?” (being), but “How is the true mediated?” — how do grounding, appearance, actuality function?

The entire doctrine of essence accomplishes the movement from implicit to explicit reflection: What was tacitly at work in the doctrine of being — mediation, grounding, reciprocal constitution — is here consciously comprehended. This movement is the fundamental structure of all thinking that enlightens itself about itself.
