Terms of Use
hegel.net is a non-commercial reference site about the philosophy of G.W.F. Hegel. It is run by one person, it sells nothing, it asks for nothing, and it collects nothing about you.
These terms are short because the site is simple. If anything here is unclear, write to info @ hegel.net.
1. What this site is
A collection of texts, translations, diagrams and reference tables. Freely readable, without registration, without accounts, without advertising.
There is nothing to buy here and nothing to log into. The site is run free of charge; no payment of any kind is asked for its use.
2. Offers by others
Some pages mention audio books, recordings or posters offered by Martin Grimsmann and Lutz Hansen.
Those offers are not part of this site. Any contract about them is concluded solely with the parties offering them. I am neither seller nor agent, I process no orders, and I receive no commission and no other payment for these transactions.
Please address questions, complaints and withdrawal to the respective seller.
3. What you may do with the content
Each article carries its own licence, stated at its foot:
- Zero Marginal Cost Licence — most articles by Kai Froeb, and the explanatory texts under the triangles. Free to read, copy and share digitally; free for teaching and research; unrestricted quotation. Not to be sold or commercially redistributed.
- Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 — contributions whose authors chose it.
- All rights reserved — contributions by others, published here with permission.
Hegel’s own texts are in the public domain. Translations, commentaries and the structural arrangement of the system are not: they are editorial work and carry the licence stated on each page.
Quoting is always allowed, by the ordinary standards of scholarship and with a source reference.
4. Translations
These pages were originally written in German. The language versions were produced semi-automatically with the help of machine translation and revised afterwards.
That method uncovered many errors which had gone unnoticed in the older versions. It cannot, however, guarantee correctness — if only because Hegel’s terms have no fixed equivalent in any language.
For Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi and Arabic no one has yet been found to check the translations professionally. I can therefore give no assurance whatever about those versions; they are meant as orientation, not as evidence.
In case of doubt, the German version governs.
5. Accuracy
This site is a scholarly aid, not an authority. Texts may contain errors of transcription, translation or interpretation.
Nothing here is legal, medical, financial or any other kind of professional advice.
If you find a mistake, please report it. Corrections are welcome and are usually made within days.
6. Links to other sites
This site links to many others. I have no influence on their content, their availability or their handling of your data, and take no responsibility for them. A link is not an endorsement.
7. Availability
The site is offered as it is and as it happens to be available. No uptime is promised, and pages may change or disappear. For a durable citation, name the date on which you read a page.
8. Liability
Nothing in these terms limits liability where the law does not permit it to be limited — in particular not for intent, for gross negligence, or for injury to life, body or health.
Beyond that, I am not liable for damage arising from the use or non-availability of this site, or from information found here.
9. Automated access and AI training
Reading this site with machines is allowed. Using its texts to train AI systems is allowed under the licences named in section 3 — with the condition stated there: the resulting systems must not be used to distort this work or to turn it against its purpose.
What is not allowed is access that burdens the server: mass retrieval at speed, or repeated wholesale downloading. The site is available as a complete package — ask for it and you will get it.
10. Data protection
No personal data is collected beyond what any web server logs, and those logs are anonymised. Details are in the privacy policy.
11. Governing law
Portuguese law applies, excluding its conflict-of-laws rules and the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods.
If you are a consumer, you retain in any case the protection of the mandatory provisions of your country of residence.
12. Changes
These terms may change as the site changes. The version that governs is always the one on this page, with the date below.
13. If you believe a right is being infringed
If you believe that a right of yours is being infringed on this site — a copyright, a personality right or any other — write to me. Name the page and the passage.
Well-founded objections are put right without fuss, usually within days. Where the matter is doubtful, the passage is taken down first and sorted out afterwards.
One message is enough, and it is the quickest way.
