Commentary on the Logic, Chapter 9
The Transition from Essence to Concept
Reciprocal action (Chapter 7) has shown that the fixed opposition between the determining and the determined collapses: each member is both. The unity of the connection is thereby present — but only found, not posited as its own. The concept is the positive form of this self-determination: it does not find its distinctions ready-made but posits them as its own moments and remains with itself in them. This is the distinction that 7.11 developed, and it is decisive: a feedback loop has its members, a concept posits them.
Hegel’s concept has nothing to do with word meaning. By concept Hegel means the inner organizational structure of a thing — what makes it what it is. Demystified: the “concept of life” is not our definition of life, but (as an analogy:) something like the genetic structure that organizes the organism. Hegel’s own images for the concept point in the same direction: he calls the universal the “free power” that reaches over its other, yet is present in it “not as something violent” but “at rest and with itself” — one could therefore also call it “free love and boundless bliss” (TWA 6, 276 f.). What is meant is this: every thing has an inner logic that determines how its parts hang together. This sounds as though things were subjects (exactly the mystification that Marx criticizes). But the demystified core is sober: if we want to grasp a thing, we must find its inner structure — not merely list its external features.
The A-B-E Structure — The Genetic Code of Logic
Before developing this structure, a sentence from Hegel that ties it to the Logic of Essence: “Universality, particularity, and individuality are, abstractly considered, the same as identity, difference, and ground” (Encyclopedia, Vol. 1, § 164). So these are not three new determinations, but the three determinations of reflection from Chapter 5 — now, however, in such a way that they no longer exclude one another. Hegel names the difference in the same breath: the determinations of reflection “are each to be grasped and to hold for itself, separated from its opposite”; in the Concept, by contrast, “each of its moments can be grasped immediately only from and with the others.”
Anyone who takes A, B, and E for a new terminology overlooks that what recurs here is the same thing — now at the stage where it holds together.
What the universal is, Hegel determined in his lectures by way of the difference between animal and human, and it cannot be put more concisely: “The human being is thinking, and is universal, but he is thinking only insofar as the universal is for him. The animal, too, is universal in itself, but the universal as such is not for it, but always only the individual. The animal sees an individual thing, e.g., its feed, a human being, and so on.”[1] Only the human being, he adds, thereby doubles himself, “so as to be the universal for the universal.”
His example for this is the word I: “When I say I, I mean myself as this individual, thoroughly determinate person. In fact, however, in saying this I state nothing particular about myself. I is also every other.”[1:1] The most individual word of language is at the same time the most universal — in it the Concept can be read off before it has been developed.
To this a warning that Hegel voices in 1825, one that names the most common error in dealing with the universal: imagine that the universal contains the particular the way a genus contains its species; “if we make the universal abstract, taking away the determination that it contains the particular within itself,” then what remains is an empty shell.[2] The abstract universal is not the universal, but its loss.
This structure returns as the first of the ordering modes in [[systematisches-denken:7]] (optional) — developed there without presupposing Hegel, using objects everyone knows.
Carry this out (Experiment 62): As you read these lines, you simultaneously enact three levels: (1) Universal (A) — universal structures of language, argumentation, and logic that hold for every reader. (2) Particular (B) — your cultural, biographical, and professional perspective — the specific way in which you, as this person with these experiences, take in the text. (3) Individual (E) — your unique individual reaction right now, in this moment, in this mood. Notice: the particular (B) is not just some feature of yours. It consists of the particularities that result from your being human — the roles and perspectives in which the universal (a rational being) becomes embodied in you.
The A-B-E structure applied to democracy: A (Universal) — the principle of the self-government of the people. This principle necessarily demands certain particularizations. Inwardly (organs): every democracy needs a legislative function, an executive function, and a judicial function — this follows from the concept of self-government itself, for whoever governs themselves must be able to set rules, enforce them, and review them. Outwardly (kinds): self-government can be organized immediately (directly — the people decide for themselves) or mediately (representatively — the people elect representatives who decide). This distinction is disjunctive: either the people decide for themselves or they delegate. E (Individual) — this concrete democracy here and now, say the Federal Republic of Germany, which mixes both forms (representative in principle, with direct elements at the state level). Without A, B would be arbitrary (why precisely these organs?). Without B, A would be empty (how is self-government concretely realized?). Without E, everything would be abstract (where is the actuality?). The three moments are non-self-subsistent — they exist only in and through one another.
The logical necessity: without A no determining principle, without B no distinctions, without E no concrete realization. Counter-test: examine the example before accepting it. The claim was that the three organs follow necessarily from the concept of self-government. Is that true? The separation of powers into precisely this threefold division is an invention of the eighteenth century; Athenian democracy did not know it and was nonetheless a democracy. Likewise, the disjunction between direct and representative is not as clean as it looks — sortition (selection by lot) fits into neither column.
What follows from this? Not that A-B-E fails to hold. Rather, that the necessity does not lie at the level at which I claimed it. What is necessary is that the principle of self-government must particularize itself in order to be actual — a self-government without organs is none. What is not necessary is that it be these organs. That is the difference between the universal, which demands particularization, and a particular particularization that was historically arrived at.
Whoever fails to make this distinction uses logic in the way warned against in 0.4: a successful presentation is taken as proof. The honest version is weaker and more useful — A-B-E says that a principle remains empty without particularizations, and thereby poses the question of which particularizations it actually has. [KF]
A-B-E is not a classification but a living movement: the universal particularizes itself, the particular individuates itself, the individual returns into the universal.
The Particular — What Formal Logic Does Not Understand
Classical logic knows only the universal (class) and the singular (element). Hegel introduces the particular as an indispensable middle term. Formal logic sees B only as a subset (What belongs to the class?). In Hegel, the particular develops out of the universal — it is not merely some arbitrary subgroup, but can be derived from the universal. This is the decisive difference from a simple set relation.
Two directions of particularization: The universal particularizes itself in two ways: (1) Outward — into species. Triangle particularizes into equilateral, isosceles, scalene. The species can be derived from the universal if a complete disjunctive division is possible (either A or B or C, no D). This succeeds well in logic, mathematics, and many products of the mind; less so in nature, because there the species cannot always be fully derived from the generic concept. (2) Inward — into parts (organs, functions). An organism particularizes into organs that work together as means for the whole. Here one can usually state which requirements the particularization must satisfy: the organs of the body can be understood from its form of life, the departments of an organization from its purpose. This is something different from deriving their concrete shape — which organs a living being actually has follows from its history, not from the concept of life (cf. 9.4b).
What matters is this: the various B’s must be derivable from A. Only then is B genuine particularization and not merely an arbitrary classification imposed from outside.
The chair example — why concepts are not lists of features: Formal logic defines: “A chair is a piece of seating furniture with four legs, a backrest, and a seat.” But why exactly these features? The selection seems thrown together at random. Hegel’s alternative: “A chair is a place to sit” — that is the higher concept (A). The particularizations (B) follow from this in connection with real conditions: the seat follows from the fact that body weight must rest somewhere. The backrest follows from the need to relieve the upper body. The legs follow from the fact that the seat must be raised off the ground. And the various forms of chair (office chair, throne, bar stool) follow from different purposes of sitting. The parts are not arbitrarily thrown together but follow systematically from the basic concept. This is particularization inward (organs). The species (office chair vs. bar stool) are particularization outward. Both can be derived from A — the concept carries within itself the principle of its own development. (What this means when it is living becomes fully visible only in the Idea of Life, chapter 19: the S³ processes — self-differentiation, self-preservation, self-sublation — are the living form of this particularization.)
On disjunctive completeness: With objects of the mind, derivability shows itself even more clearly. Rule divides completely and without overlap into heteronomy (dictatorship, monarchy) and self-determination (democracy). A third possibility does not logically exist. Such a complete disjunctive division is the ideal of particularization outward.
A further example: the structure of capital valorization (A) necessarily demands particularization into productive, commercial, and interest-bearing capital (B) — one can show why there must be exactly these three forms.
The human being as an example of living particularization: The universal concept of the human being (A — a rational natural being) realizes itself in every individual person (E) simultaneously in various particularities (B): different roles (parent, worker, citizen), different identities (cultural, linguistic, professional), different abilities. These particularities do not stand alongside the universal but embody it — each role is a specific way of being human. The individual person in their concrete act (E) carries out these particularities in a single enactment of life — yet they are not their sum. Why this is not a mere nicety but decides the very possibility of understanding is shown in the section after next.
The Individual — What Cannot Be Derived
The concept demands its particularization, and the form of particularization emerges from the universal — but which empirical particulars will realize it is not thereby deduced; the whole preceding section rests on this point. With the individual, derivability comes to an end, and this is not a gap in the method but a determination of the matter itself.
Try this: Think of someone you know well. List what you know about him — his origin, occupation, formative influences, convictions, affiliations. Then ask: could you predict from this list what he would answer to a question he has never heard before? You could guess. You could not know.
The obvious counterposition is the sociological one: the individual arises as an intersection — the more circles cross in a person, the more unique the combination turns out, and uniqueness is nothing but this combination. Georg Simmel worked this out in his theory of the intersection of social circles, and as a description it captures something: people really do belong to many circles at once, and the more circles, the more unmistakable their position becomes.
But it is too little. Whoever knows all of a person’s roles, formative influences, and affiliations still does not know how he enacts them — which ones he sets against which in which situation, what he makes of them, where he exceeds them. And that is precisely the individual. It is the manner of enactment, not the sum of what is enacted. From a list of particulars, their interplay does not follow.
The logical reason for this is already contained in the A-B-E structure. If E were derivable from A and B, it would not be a moment in its own right but a result — and the structure would have two moments instead of three. That it has three means exactly this: the individual adds something not contained in the other two. It is the place where the concept is not merely determined but realized — and realization is never already contained in determination, otherwise it would not be needed.
The consequence for knowing: The individual cannot be derived, only experienced — from what this person does and says. What one knows about A and B supplies anticipations: usable expectations with which one approaches another person, and without which one could not even begin. But they are anticipations, not results, and they are revisable in both directions — the judgment about the universal and the particular no less than the judgment about the individual. Whoever takes them for results has stopped knowing and started classifying.
Why this grounds the rule of fair understanding: From this follows the obligation to seek out an unfamiliar position in its strongest form before criticizing it — and not out of courtesy, but for logical reasons. If the other person’s position were derivable from his origin, his school of thought, his milieu, one could think it through oneself and would not need to ask. Since it is not, one cannot reconstruct the strongest version but only inquire after it. Whoever instead infers from A and B what the other person probably means is criticizing a derivation, not a person — and reliably learns nothing he did not already know.
This holds in both directions. One’s own standpoint, too, is not merely the sum of one’s own formative influences, and whoever takes it as such mistakes his anticipations for insights.
What the Structure Achieves — Two False Oppositions
Whether a logical structure holds is shown by what it resolves. Two dilemmas regularly treated as unresolvable in debate turn out, under U-P-I, not to be dilemmas at all. [KF]
Universal values or cultural diversity? The dilemma runs: either there are universally valid standards, in which case cultural differences are irrelevant — or cultures are fundamentally different, in which case there is no possibility of understanding between them. Under U-P-I the opposition falls apart: all human beings share in the universal structures of reason (U), but they express these structures through their particular origins (P) and realize them as individual persons (I). None of the three levels is the truly real one; understanding runs through U, but it happens only in P and I.
Individual or community? Either the individual comes first, in which case the community is merely their sum — or the community comes first, in which case the individual is merely its function. Here too: genuine individuality arises when universal humanity (U) and particular belonging (P) come together in the individual person (I). What is set in opposition here are in fact moments of a single concept.
Notice what this resolution is not: it is not a mediation between two positions, not a compromise. The dilemmas arise because one moment is in each case taken for the whole — and they disappear as soon as one sees that the three do not exclude one another (cf. § 164).
Moments of the Concept vs. the Diverse
The logical test: Can I remove one moment without the others changing? With the diverse: yes (a table remains a table whether or not there are chairs). With moments of the concept: no. Each moment of the concept is the whole concept in the determinateness of this moment. The universal (the laws of chemistry) is the whole concept water as possibility; the particular (H₂O) as determinateness; the singular (this water here) as actuality.
Stekeler’s Linguistic-Analytic Reading
Stekeler translates Hegel’s doctrine of the concept into the grammar of social practice.[3] The universal is not the class, but the norm — what holds for everyone and what everyone recognizes as valid. The particular is the concrete application of the norm. The singular is the case — this concrete action here and now. This translation shows that Hegel’s logic of the concept is not detached metaphysics, but the grammar of what we do when we judge, infer, and act.
The Three Reductions — A Logical Diagnosis
The U-P-S structure provides a precise diagnostic tool. Whoever absolutizes the particular (P — culture, gender, ethnicity) and cuts it off from the universal (U — universal human dignity) is performing a reduction to P without U. Conversely: whoever plays the universal off against the particular (“we’re all the same, after all”) is performing a reduction to U without P. Both forms miss the truth that lies in the mediation of U, P, and S. The insight is not political but logical: without U, society disintegrates into incommensurable groups; without P, society becomes abstract and levelling; without S, the individual human being is sacrificed to the group or to the principle.
The third reduction is the most demanding, and for that reason is rarely recognized as a reduction at all: the reduction to U and P together. Here nothing is lacking in differentiation — the principle is grasped, the particularizations are carefully broken down, the individual’s situation is determined down to its every branching. Yet from this result it is concluded that one now knows the person. This is the error of 9.4b: the individual is not the sum of their particularities. In practice, this reduction appears as diagnosis rather than conversation — the other person is not asked but classified, and their objection is taken as confirmation of the classification. It is the occupational disease of well-informed theorists, whereas the first two are more the disease of poorly informed partisans.
