The third form of objectivity: a purpose stands opposed to the material. In external purposiveness, the purpose remains external to it --- the carpenter and the wood.
Origin: Aristotle, causa finalis; Kant, purpose in nature and freedom. Hegel distinguishes external from internal purposiveness --- only the second is life.
