A Systematic Contribution: The Companion Commentary on Logic
This text is a preview of History of the Reception of Hegel, volume I, to be published in 2026 by Reflexivity Press.
Appearing in parallel with this first volume of the reception history is a comprehensive commentary on Hegel’s Science of Logic (more than 640 pages), which undertakes a concrete, systematic attempt to integrate the fragmentations diagnosed in the present volume.
This commentary builds on the logic of reflection developed by Johannes Heinrichs and develops the three central innovations mentioned repeatedly here:
1. The four basic operations as the explicit methodological core — they systematically answer the four fundamental critiques that this volume has reconstructed.
2. The nine ethical criteria — derived systematically from the logic itself, without presupposing any external morality. They show that a consistently executed dialectic could have recognized fascism as unreasonable.
3. Radical self-application — the system applies its own criteria to itself. After Auschwitz, a philosophical system can no longer claim to be immune to critique.
The two volumes complement each other: this volume shows the historical-systematic reasons for the fragmentation. The commentary on Logic offers a concrete attempt at integration. Together they form a double movement: the diagnosis of fragmentation and the attempt to overcome it. Not as a closed system, but as an open, self-critical process — as it must be after Auschwitz.
