Kommentar zum subjektiven Geist, Chapter 17

And Why the Phenomenology Is Propaedeutic

From this follows something about the relation to logic. What consciousness goes through — sensuous certainty, perception, understanding, the establishing of independence in self-consciousness — it does before it philosophizes. These are the ways one stands toward things before asking what thinking is.

For the 1807 book this is the actual purpose. It shows the reader that the perspectives with which they approach a philosophical work — even this one — are themselves at stake. Whoever thinks they possess the most certain thing with sensuous certainty learns, in the course of it, that it is the poorest.

The Encyclopedia version does not need to accomplish this; it stands within the system and presupposes logic. That is why it is shorter — and why it is no substitute for the book, but its systematic location. [KF]

What is not present here: the entire course of the 1807 book. The Encyclopedia version is shorter and differently constructed; whoever equates the two confuses two texts.
