Concrete
Hegel (methodological ideal)
Concrete for Hegel means: rich in determinations, mediated, living. The concrete is the developed totality (not the sensuously individual!). Example: becoming is more concrete than being or nothing (because it contains both). The concept is the most concrete (the richest mediation). "The true is the whole" = the concretely developed. The Logic becomes ever more concrete: from abstract being to the concrete absolute idea. Concrete ≠ empirical, but = comprehended in all mediations.
Origin
Lat. *concretus* (grown together). Traditionally: concrete = individual, sensuous. Hegel inverts this: concrete = mediated, richly determined. The sensuous individual is abstract (isolated).
