Being-in-itself

Hegel (Logic of Being & pervasive)

Being as it is independent of our relation to it. Not "in itself" in the sense of "alone," but "in itself" in the sense of "according to its own nature." A first, immediate determination that still has to be developed.

Origin

Kant distinguishes the thing in itself (unknowable) and appearance (knowable). Hegel dynamizes this: being-in-itself is the seed that becomes being-for-itself.
