Karl Friedrich von Steiger

Karl Friedrich von Steiger (1754–1841) was a dragoon captain in Bern and, from 1785, a member of the Great Council.

Hegel served as a private tutor in his household from 1793 to 1796 — his first position after the Seminary, three years in a city whose patrician rule repelled him. From Steiger’s library came what Hegel read at the time about English economics and French politics.
