Determinacy

Hegel (Logic of Being, quality as determinate)

Determinacy is the posited, concrete determination. In existence (Dasein): being with determinacy = quality. Determinacy is not arbitrary, but necessary from the matter. "Truth as determinate determinacy" (subtitle Ch. 1): truth is not abstract, but concretely determinate. Every something has its determinacy (is this, not that). Determinacy is boundary: it demarcates, excludes.

Origin

German: Bestimmtheit as a substantivization of bestimmt. Hegel makes this a technical concept: the concrete quality as distinct from determination in general in the abstract.
