Ferdinand Christian Baur

Ferdinand Christian Baur (1792–1860) founded the Tübingen School of Protestant theology.

He applied Hegel’s concept of history to the New Testament: the Gospels, he argued, were not reports but testimonies of a conflict — between the Jewish-Christian and the Gentile-Christian tendencies. Out of this application arose historical-critical biblical scholarship, which continues to be practiced today.
