अदिति मुखर्जी / Aditi Mukherjee

Aditi Mukherjee was Professor of Linguistics at Osmania University, Hyderabad, and Director of the National Translation Mission, India’s programme for translating scholarly literature into the languages of the country. She currently teaches as a visiting professor at IIIT Hyderabad.

Together with R. Srivatsan she has translated the first 72 paragraphs of the preface to Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit into Hindi — the first translation of this text into an Indian language. A commentary is in preparation and already covers paragraphs 1 to 19 and 53 to 72.

The two write that they have paid close attention to the fine grain of the text, and they expressly invite corrections. That is not a courtesy: a translation of Hegel into Hindi has no predecessors against which it could be checked. For readers without access to Western philosophy in their own language — apart from Marx, Lenin and Mao — translation, commentary and glossary together are what makes the text available at all.

She is also working with R. Srivatsan on a Hindi glossary of Hegel’s terminology, which feeds into the term table of this site.
