Thomas Johann Seebeck (1770–1831) was a private scholar in Jena and discovered the thermoelectric effect that bears his name.

He belonged to the circle around Goethe and was closer to Goethe’s theory of colors than to Newton’s. In natural philosophy, Hegel followed Goethe’s view — a choice later held against him as evidence of his scientific backwardness.
