R. Srivatsan was Senior Fellow at the Anveshi Research Centre for Women’s Studies in Hyderabad. He works on development, health, religion and culture, and is a philosopher and political theorist.

Together with Aditi Mukherjee he has translated the first 72 paragraphs of the preface to Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit into Hindi — the first translation of this text into an Indian language. A commentary already covers paragraphs 1 to 19 and 53 to 72; paragraphs 20 to 52 are to follow.

For the two of them, translation, commentary and glossary belong together. They give their readers as the reason: anyone reading in Hindi finds almost no Western philosophy translated — apart from Marx, Lenin and Mao — and without a commentary the text would stay closed. The work took four times as long as planned.

He is also working with Aditi Mukherjee on a Hindi glossary of Hegel’s terminology, which feeds into the term table of this site.
