Novalis (Friedrich von Hardenberg, 1772–1801) was a mining engineer and died at the age of 28.
His magical idealism seeks to romanticize the world: to give the ordinary a higher meaning. Hegel counts him among the followers of Fichte who made the I into pure arbitrariness — longing remains with itself and never arrives at the matter at hand.
