Karl Ritter

Karl Ritter (1779–1859) became professor of geography in Berlin in 1820 and, alongside Alexander von Humboldt, founded scientific geography.

For Hegel’s lectures on the philosophy of history, Ritter’s Erdkunde [Geography] was the source. The geographical portion of these lectures — the correlation of landscape and national character — comes largely from him and shares its limitations.
