Karl Ludwig von Haller

Karl Ludwig von Haller (1768–1854) was a grandson of Albrecht von Haller, professor of history in Bern from 1806, and a member of the Great Council.

His Restoration of Political Science gave the post-1815 era its name. Haller derived all authority from the private right of the stronger — the state, he held, was nothing but enlarged property.

Hegel was his sharpest critic. In the Philosophy of Right, he devotes to him a remark that is among the harshest in the book: whoever grounds right on force sublates the very concept of right.
