Heinrich Julius Ritter

Heinrich Julius Ritter (1791–1869) studied in Halle, Göttingen, and Berlin, where he was a student of Schleiermacher, and became a historian of philosophy.

His History of Philosophy stood alongside Hegel’s lectures on the same subject — with an opposite aim: Ritter wanted to present what the thinkers had said, Hegel, how one followed from another. The dispute over what the history of philosophy is begins here.
