Antinomy

A contradiction that arises from the consistent application of the understanding to objects beyond experience (or to infinite series). Kant saw antinomies as unresolvable (Ch. 1.2). Hegel sees them as necessary dialectical stages that push toward sublation (e.g., the antinomy of finitude, Ch. 1.9).
