Friedrich Johannes Frommann

Friedrich Johannes Frommann (1797–1886) studied in Jena, was simultaneously a member of a Burschenschaft (a German student fraternity movement associated with nationalist and liberal ideals) and an apprentice bookseller, and took part in the Wartburg Festival (an 1817 gathering of nationalist student fraternities).

His father, Friedrich Ernst Frommann, ran the Jena publishing house whose home Hegel frequented. The son embodies the connection that occupied Hegel throughout his life: the Burschenschaft as an expression of a longing for freedom that he shared, and of a mentality that he opposed.
