Christoph Martin Wieland

Christoph Martin Wieland (1733–1813) was a poet, from 1772 tutor to the princes in Weimar, and afterward an independent writer.

Like Hegel, he came from Württemberg and was among the first German authors able to make a living by writing. His Teutscher Merkur created a literary public that had not existed before — the precondition for philosophy to be publicly debated at all.
