Wilhelm Vatke

Wilhelm Vatke (1806–1882) taught Old Testament theology in Berlin.

His Biblical Theology of 1835 applied Hegel’s concept of history to the Old Testament — the religion of Israel as development, not as revelation of a finished law. The book appeared in the same year as Strauss’s Life of Jesus and shared its fate: it made its author unemployable.
