Wilhelm Gesenius

Wilhelm Gesenius (1786–1842) taught Oriental languages in Halle and wrote the Hebrew dictionary still in use today.

He was engaged in a dispute with Tholuck in Halle — scholarship against religious revivalism — and was for that reason watched by the Prussian government. In this dispute, Hegel took the side of scholarship.
