Paul Wolfgang Merkel

Paul Wolfgang Merkel (1756–1820) was a Nuremberg merchant, council member, and one of the men who administered the transfer of the imperial city to Bavaria.

During Hegel’s Nuremberg years, he belonged to the city notables with whom the school rector had dealings. The school reform Hegel carried out needed such connections — it cost money that the city had to raise.
