Johann Gustav Droysen

Johann Gustav Droysen (1808–1884) was a historian and attended Hegel’s lectures in Berlin.

His Historik — the first theory of historical scholarship in Germany — owes to Hegel its fundamental idea that history is to be understood, not merely established as fact. Droysen coined the term Hellenism and wrote a new history of Alexander.
